Artwork does show some very light signs of discolouration in the blue sky section which is unnoticeable under normal conditions (see images). It is not known if this is intentional by the artist or a discolouration of the varnish layer above the oil. Frame is in mint condition.
Provenance: Private collection

Description

An evocative original oil from Alex Jawdokimov’s acclaimed “High & Dry” series, depicting fishing boats resting at low tide beneath a glowing sky. The elegant panoramic format (90 × 40 cm) is superb for hallways, above sideboards or sofas, and brings a calm, coastal atmosphere into the home. A rare, unique oil from a sought-after series that was also selected for giclée reproduction.

About the Artist

Born in Smolensk, Russia, Alex Jawdokimov (1937–2019) survived profound early hardship — internment during WWII, time in a gulag — before emigrating to the UK in 1947. Settling in Somerset, he rapidly learned English (already fluent in several languages) and became a British citizen. He studied at Somerset College of Art and pursued a wide-ranging creative career: illustrator for Collins and EMI; professional dancer touring with a Russian Cossack company; musician; and actor, appearing with Sean Connery and Michael Caine in films such as
The Eagle Has Landed. He also trained to fly aircraft in Canada with the RAF.

Painting, however, remained his lifelong focus. Jawdokimov became well known for romantic cityscapes, racing scenes and his luminous birch tree series, blending memory, symbolism and technical finesse. His practice often combined oil, acrylic and metallic leaf to create subtly shimmering surfaces that respond beautifully to changing light. He exhibited widely across the UK, USA and Australia and was represented by respected UK galleries including The Little Red Gallery, Wyecliffe Galleries and the Diane Hutt Gallery. His work is held in private collections internationally.

Estimated Date

2004

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1078/0904/6866/files/57_b7d2fd14-08c1-4ac6-86a0-dececb4bb6c9.png?v=1779865684
https://cragbankart.co.uk/products/alex-jawdokimov-large-original-2004-oil-from-acclaimed-high-dry-series-90x40
