Caldwell, depicting an expansive British moorland scattered with flowering heather beneath a dramatic Edwardian sky. Painted in 1911, this work exemplifies Caldwell’s refined academic training and painterly sensitivity to light, space, and natural mood. The composition balances breadth and intimacy, offering a quietly powerful landscape that rewards close viewing. Presented in a sympathetic period-style gilt frame.

About the Artist

Edmund G. Caldwell was born in Canterbury and trained under Thomas Sidney Cooper RA before studying at the West London School of Art and the Académie Julian in Paris with Gustave Boulanger and Jules-Joseph Lefebvre. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy from 1880 and won a prize in 1884 for
Run to Ground. Caldwell achieved international recognition as an illustrator of animals and sporting subjects, most famously for Percy FitzPatrick’s
Jock of the Bushveld
(1907), for which he travelled to South Africa to sketch wildlife from life. His work is held in major institutional collections including the British Museum, Harris Museum & Art Gallery, Nature in Art, and York Museums Trust.

Estimated Date

1911 (dated)

Provenance & Notes

From a private UK collection.
