He studied architecture at Manchester University between 1971 and 1979 before practising as an architect in Ulverston, Cumbria from 1980 to 1991. In 1991 he became a full-time artist and later travelled extensively throughout the Middle East, experiences which strongly influenced his atmospheric use of light and colour. He subsequently lived and painted in Santa Fe, New Mexico and the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.
