Three figures stand beside the path in the foreground, while a small sailing boat crosses the bay.

The landscape is framed by mountains, their rocky slopes catching pinkish light beneath a bank of grey cloud. A break in the cloud reveals blue sky above the water. The foreground is painted in deeper greens and browns, with a rough path leading past the building towards the shore.

The architecture and mountainous coastline give the scene an Italianate character, although the precise location has not been identified.
