Educated at Liverpool Art College, he became an influential figure in the regional art scene and worked closely with the Williamson Art Gallery in Birkenhead. Gardner was elected an Associate Member of the Royal Cambrian Academy in 1977 and became a full Academician in 1983. He exhibited extensively with the RCA and other regional institutions, and his work was the subject of a major retrospective,\nForty Years a Member, at the RCA Upper Gallery in Conwy.
