The panoramic format, confident draughtsmanship, and luminous handling of natural light place this work firmly among the artist’s mature late Victorian output. Signed and dated 1899, the composition captures both the working rhythm of the British coast and the atmospheric conditions for which Lewis was especially admired.

About the Artist

George Lennard Lewis was a prominent 19th-century British watercolourist renowned for his maritime and coastal scenes. Born into an artistic family, he was the son of painter George Robert Lewis and cousin to Royal Academician John Frederick Lewis. He exhibited widely at the Royal Academy, the Grosvenor Gallery, and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, as well as major regional venues across Britain. Although influenced by his European travels, Lewis is best remembered for his vivid depictions of the British coastline.
