The composition is dominated by a sweeping East Anglian sky, with layered clouds opening to reveal light across the scene, while the riverside buildings, chapel tower and warehouse frontage create a detailed and highly recognisable view.
A particularly appealing feature is the painted “Sommerfield & Thomas” signage, anchoring the scene within its working waterfront context and adding a strong sense of period character. The balance between careful architectural detail and expressive sky gives the painting both visual impact and decorative appeal.

About the Artist

Thomas Leslie Kerkham (1918–1986) was a British landscape and townscape painter associated with both Norfolk and Yorkshire. Born in Norfolk, he was educated at Bootham School in York before studying at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, where he was awarded a Diploma in Fine Art in June 1939.
Training at the Slade placed him within one of Britain’s most respected traditions of academic painting, known for strong draughtsmanship and observational skill. From 1946 onwards he became known for painting the Yorkshire Dales, producing landscapes and architectural scenes of northern towns and countryside.
He later worked as Art Master at St Michael’s College, Leeds until 1960, and was a member of the Leeds Fine Artists group. His work is characterised by atmospheric skies, careful architectural structure and traditional British landscape technique.

Estimated Date

Mid 20th century (circa 1950s–1960s)

Provenance & Notes

From a private UK collection.
