Born in Norfolk, he was educated at Bootham School in York before studying at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, receiving his Diploma in Fine Art in 1939.\nFrom 1946 onwards he became known for painting the Yorkshire Dales, producing landscapes and architectural scenes that captured the character of northern England.
