His early work reflected the mills, streets and industrial communities of Northern England before his artistic direction evolved following a move to Cornwall in 1996. The dramatic Cornish coastline and friendships with artists including Terry Frost and Patrick Heron inspired a more expressive use of colour while retaining the narrative quality that defines his work. Today Stafford's paintings combine the observational charm of Northern British art with the bold palette and painterly freedom associated with Cornwall's modernist tradition. He has exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, became a member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists in 2003, and his work is represented in numerous public and private collections, including that of HM Queen Elizabeth II.
