An original oil on board by Northern British artist Alan J. Thompson (b.1940), depicting Stamford Street in Ashton-under-Lyne.
Thompson's tightly observed urban paintings form an important strand of his work, recording the streets, civic buildings and industrial architecture of Greater Manchester and the surrounding towns. Stamford Street, Ashton is particularly representative of this aspect of his practice, taking a familiar Tameside streetscape as its subject rather than an idealised landscape.
