Description

A striking and characterful small-scale original painting by Royal College of Art trained British painter Chris Appleby, created in 2007 as part of The Post Card Project. Despite its intimate format, the work carries strong visual presence and narrative energy. The seated female figure suggests movement and transformation, reflecting Appleby’s intuitive approach to painting and his recurring interest in archetypal characters.

Professionally framed, mounted and glazed, the painting is ready to display and offers a compelling opportunity to acquire a signed original by an established exhibiting British artist whose work appears in both corporate and private collections internationally.

About the Artist

Chris Appleby (born 16 February 1951, Birmingham) is a British painter whose work moves between expressive figuration and abstraction. He studied at Wolverhampton College of Art from 1971 to 1973 before continuing his training at the Royal College of Art in London between 1975 and 1978. Appleby has exhibited widely across the United Kingdom including the Whitechapel Open in London and the John Moores Exhibition at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool.

His work has also been shown with respected contemporary galleries including Art First in London, Blond Fine Art, Deptford Cross, Churchill College Cambridge and Oxford Gallery, as well as major art fairs at the Barbican and Olympia in London. Paintings by Appleby are held in corporate collections including Deloitte & Touche and Glaxo Smith Kline, alongside private collections throughout the UK, Europe, Canada, Hong Kong and New Zealand. His practice often develops through improvisation during the act of painting, allowing symbolic figures and recurring characters such as the mythic Lilith to emerge naturally through the process.
