Description

The South Bank Lion, Winter Light is an atmospheric original London oil painting by David Sawyer RBA, capturing one of the capital's most recognisable riverside landmarks.

The strong silhouette of the lion anchors the foreground, while Big Ben and the Palace of Westminster rise beyond beneath a luminous winter sky. Sawyer combines architecture, changing light and urban atmosphere to create a convincing sense of depth and movement.

His confident brushwork and controlled palette give the painting an immediacy particularly well suited to the subject. Rather than presenting London as a precise architectural record, he uses light, weather and movement to convey the experience of the city.

The artwork and painted moulded frame are both in excellent overall condition, and the painting is ready to hang.

About the Artist

David Sawyer RBA was born in London in 1961 and grew up in Margate, Kent. He studied Fine Art at Canterbury College of Art from 1979 to 1983 and has worked as a professional artist since graduating, including an early period as a scene painter.

Sawyer describes himself as a modern British Impressionist. His principal interest lies in architectural subjects and in the way light reveals the structure, character and atmosphere of buildings. His subjects include London streets, historic British cities, Venice, Mediterranean landscapes and urban skylines.

He was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 2004 and is also an elected member of the Chelsea Art Society. He has exhibited widely with leading British art societies and through established commercial galleries in Britain and overseas.

His commissions have included London views for a City boardroom and paintings for the State Rooms of Cunard's Queen Mary 2. His work is represented in public and private collections, including the Royal Collection.
