A charming and atmospheric British riverside woodland scene by exhibited 19th-century artist Edwin Nichol. The composition is balanced and naturalistic, with carefully observed trees and a calm riverbank rendered in a restrained, harmonious palette. Light filtering through the foliage creates depth and tranquillity, typical of late Victorian landscape painting.
Beautifully presented in an ornate gilt frame, the painting has excellent wall presence at 82 × 66.5 cm framed and is ready to hang. Suitable for both traditional and contemporary interiors. Previously handled by Mallams Auctioneers in 2013.
About the Artist
Edwin Nichol (1855–1923) was a British landscape painter born in Liverpool on 13 April 1855. He studied at Norwich before entering the Royal Academy Schools in 1874. From 1879 to 1900 he exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy, showing works including Tidal River, Coast of Suffolk and Evening. In 1886 he was elected a member of the New English Art Club, a progressive exhibiting society associated with naturalistic landscape painting.
Nichol worked from London studios in Camden Road and Haverstock Hill before settling in the late 1890s at The Cloisters, Snape, near Saxmundham in Suffolk. There he produced tranquil river and pastoral landscapes for which he is best known. His work remains sought after by collectors of Victorian and Edwardian British landscape painting.
