Description
This original pen and wash depicts Kirkcaldy Harbour during the late nineteenth century, with a square-rigged sailing vessel alongside the quayside and the town's historic waterfront beyond. Fine pen work and delicate washes create an atmospheric reconstruction of one of Fife's principal ports.
George Birrell is well known for recording the historic towns, harbours and villages of eastern Scotland. This composition combines precise architectural drawing with maritime detail, celebrating Kirkcaldy's rich coastal heritage.
About the Artist
George Birrell studied at Glasgow School of Art between 1967 and 1971 before teaching art and design and becoming a full-time professional artist in 1980. His work is closely associated with the towns, fishing villages and historic streets of Fife.
