Description
This original pen and wash depicts Old Kirk Wynd, one of the oldest surviving streets in Kirkcaldy, Fife, with the medieval tower of Kirkcaldy Old Kirk rising above the surrounding buildings. Based on the artist's inscription, the scene recreates the appearance of the street around 1900, before later twentieth-century redevelopment transformed much of the area.
Executed with fine pen work and restrained washes of colour, Birrell concentrates on the character of the historic streetscape rather than dramatic colour. The carefully observed stone buildings, stepped gables and winding roadway lead the eye naturally towards the Old Kirk tower, creating a composition that balances architectural precision with a strong sense of place.
Unlike many of Birrell's harbour scenes, this work celebrates the historic urban character of inland Fife. It captures a familiar Kirkcaldy landmark while preserving the atmosphere of an earlier period, making it particularly appealing to collectors with connections to the town or an interest in Scotland's historic streets and architecture.
