Description

This original 1988 mixed-media work depicts Pan Ha', the historic waterfront quarter of Dysart on the Fife coast. The whitewashed cottages stand beneath the medieval St Serf's Tower, creating one of the area's most distinctive architectural views.

Birrell combines strong linear drawing with layered areas of colour across the buildings, tiled roofs, trees, tower and sky. The fuller treatment of the architecture and landscape gives the work greater density than a simple pen-and-wash study, while retaining the clarity and rhythmic structure associated with his Scottish coastal subjects.

The composition reflects Birrell's longstanding interest in Scotland's fishing communities, where closely grouped buildings, harbour architecture and historic towers are arranged into carefully balanced forms. Although firmly rooted in a recognisable location, the scene is interpreted through the artist's individual sense of colour, structure and atmosphere.

About the Artist

George Birrell was born in 1950 and studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1967 to 1971. He subsequently taught art and design before becoming a full-time professional artist.

His work is particularly associated with the fishing villages and coastal towns of eastern Scotland, especially the East Neuk of Fife. Their harbours, cottages, church towers and winding streets have provided recurring subjects throughout his career.

Birrell's paintings are not simply topographical records. He combines observation, memory and imagination to produce highly individual compositions distinguished by strong architectural forms, expressive colour and carefully controlled pictorial rhythm.
