Description
A beautifully atmospheric original watercolour by celebrated Indian modernist Gopal Ghose. This evocative composition captures two boats resting quietly on the mist-covered waters of the Hooghly River. Executed with remarkable subtlety and restraint, the work perfectly demonstrates Ghose’s mastery of tonal wash, light, and negative space — qualities that established him as one of the most important watercolour painters of twentieth-century India. The elongated vertical format gives the composition an elegant contemporary feel, while the soft monochromatic palette creates a calm and contemplative mood ideally suited to both modern and traditional interiors. The delicate reflections and sparse handling of detail draw the viewer directly into the stillness of the early morning scene. Professionally presented in a modern black box frame with float mount behind glass and ready to hang.
About the Artist
Gopal Ghose was a pioneering figure in Indian modern art and a founding member of the influential Calcutta Group established in 1943. Born in Calcutta in 1913, he studied at the Jaipur School of Art before further training under Debi Prasad Roy Chowdhury in Madras. Ghose became widely admired for his expressive landscapes and atmospheric river scenes, particularly his innovative use of watercolour which combined spontaneity with extraordinary technical control. His work helped move Indian painting toward a more modern and internationally aware visual language during the post-independence period. Today his paintings are held in major collections including the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, and his works continue to appear at Christie’s, Sotheby’s and leading South Asian art auctions worldwide. River scenes and mist-filled Bengal landscapes remain among the artist’s most sought-after subjects, prized for their lyrical atmosphere and timeless decorative appeal.
