Description
This richly textured original acrylic by Gwynne Robins captures the spirit of celebration in Oxford — where gowned figures leap and dance beside the river as punts glide below a golden bridge, backed by the dreaming spires of the city. This joyful, expressive canvas is a tribute to academic tradition, festivity, and place, making it both a striking decorative artwork and a meaningful gift or collector’s piece.
About the Artist
Gwynne Robins is a highly regarded painter based in Oxfordshire, where he has worked for over 30 years. A trained artist from Sunningwell School of Art, just outside Abingdon, Robins has developed a distinctive impasto impressionist style, producing richly layered oil paintings that celebrate movement, narrative, and vibrant texture. His subject matter is diverse and compelling — ranging from iconic Oxford landmarks to equestrian scenes, musical and theatrical figures, and literary themes. Whether depicting dancers, riverscapes, or historic architecture, Robins captures the mood and energy of his subjects with expressive brushwork and powerful use of colour. He has held numerous solo exhibitions in Oxfordshire, including a major 70-work show at Oxford Town Hall Gallery in 2010. Highlights of his career include the acclaimed 16-canvas installation Scenes at the Covered Market, and The Sporting Thames, executed in a vibrant pointillist style. Over the past three decades, Robins has sold approximately 200 original works, with many held in private UK collections. His style draws on influences from Van Gogh, Manet, Monet, and Leon Kossoff, and he often uses palette knives, brushes, and even his gloved fingers to build up texture using a wet-on-wet technique. This is a rare opportunity to acquire an original work by an established Oxfordshire artist whose work captures the colour, rhythm, and soul of British life.
