Subject and Context
The vertically composed urban scene focuses on the architecture and atmosphere of the street, with the lamps providing the principal motif. The work sits comfortably within the Northern urban painting tradition, where familiar streets, buildings and everyday features of the built environment become the subject rather than simply the setting.
Watts combines mixed media on a rigid board support, giving the work a strongly worked surface and allowing the architectural forms and lighting of the street scene to dominate the composition.
