Description

This original gouache on paper depicts painted walls, stone surfaces and steps on a Greek island, rendered with clarity and restraint. The composition is constructed through confident blocks of colour, with cool blues balanced against warm stone tones to create a strong sense of light, texture and spatial depth. Halliday’s interest in architecture and place is evident throughout, with simplified forms and carefully judged colour relationships giving the work both decorative appeal and compositional strength. Small, resolved works such as this are highly representative of her practice and are particularly appealing to collectors of twentieth-century Scottish painting with Mediterranean subject matter.

About the Artist

Irene May Halliday was born in Kingsmuir, Scotland, in 1931 and studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee (1948–1953), where she was taught by Alberto Morrocco. She worked from 1956 to 1979 at Didsbury College of Education, becoming Head of Art and Design, and was a visiting professor at the State University College, Buffalo, New York, during 1972–73. Elected to the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour in 1955, Halliday exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, and her work is held in several public collections. In 2002 she returned to live in Arbroath, continuing to draw inspiration from travel, architecture and the coastal landscape.
