About the Artist

James Heron (fl. 1873–1919) was a Scottish landscape painter based in Edinburgh (recorded at 7 Warrender Park Crescent). He worked extensively in watercolour, depicting rural and coastal scenes across Scotland, particularly in Fife, the Highlands, and around Loch Fyne. Heron exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy and the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. His work is valued for its quiet authenticity, sensitive handling of light, and strong sense of place.

Provenance & Notes

From a private UK collection. The original verso inscription, dated 1893, identifies the subject as “Inveral Lochfyne Side”. The location and composition align closely with Heron’s documented practice and support a strong Scottish coastal provenance.
