Description

This striking oil painting depicts a bustling industrial harbour packed with steamships and working vessels. Painted by Manchester artist John Goodlad, the composition draws strongly on the Northern School tradition and echoes the influence of L. S. Lowry through its simplified forms, bold brushwork, and muted industrial palette. The scene captures the energy and atmosphere of working harbour life, making it an engaging collector’s piece or a distinctive statement artwork for industrial or maritime interiors.

About the Artist

John Goodlad is a self-taught Manchester artist whose journey into painting began later in life following a career in the building trade. After leaving school with only a pass in Art, he worked as a plumber before returning to education in his 50s to formally pursue painting, later studying on a fine art course. Deeply influenced by L. S. Lowry, Goodlad focuses on industrial and social subjects drawn from lived experience. His expressive brushwork, stylised figures, and understanding of working-class life lend his work authenticity and narrative depth. His paintings are now held in private collections across the UK.
