About the Artist
John Robert Mather (1834–1879) was a 19th-century British marine and landscape painter, born in Newcastle upon Tyne. Before working professionally as an artist he served as a Lieutenant in the 22nd Regiment of Foot (Cheshire Regiment), a background documented on period catalogue labels that place him both at military barracks and later at Barras Bridge, Newcastle, reflecting his transition from army service to civilian artistic practice. He worked primarily in watercolour, producing accomplished coastal and maritime scenes characterised by disciplined draughtsmanship and confident handling of light and weather. The reverse of this work bears a period Newcastle framer and art dealer’s label for Watson, Swan & Morgan of Grainger Street West, supporting local provenance and 19th-century circulation. Mather’s work has appeared in established UK auction catalogues, including Christie’s.
