Joseph Morris Henderson RSA (1864-1936), Woodlands
A signed oil on board by the Glasgow landscape painter Joseph Morris Henderson RSA, depicting a quiet woodland interior beneath a canopy of mature trees. Dark trunks frame a softly illuminated clearing, while loose, confident brushwork in muted greens, browns and mauves creates a strong sense of filtered light and woodland atmosphere.
Wooded landscapes, riverbanks and waterside subjects formed an important and recognisable part of Henderson's work. Contemporary accounts particularly noted his interest in flowered foregrounds, pale streams, wooded margins and softly receding countryside. Woodlands is a characteristic example of this quieter aspect of his landscape painting, balancing close observation with a broad and painterly handling of foliage and light.
About the Artist
Joseph Morris Henderson RSA was born and worked in Glasgow. He came from a prominent family of Scottish painters and trained with his father, Joseph Henderson RSW, as well as at Glasgow School of Art and Glasgow University. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, New Gallery, Walker Art Gallery, Manchester City Art Gallery, Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Water Colours. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1928 and a full Academician in 1935. His paintings are held in the Royal Scottish Academy Diploma Collection, Glasgow Museums at Kelvingrove, Paisley collections and the McLean Museum and Art Gallery in Greenock.
