Description
A superb atmospheric original oil painting by noted Yorkshire artist Joseph Pighills, depicting the historic village of Haworth with the tower of St Michael and All Angels Church rising above the rooftops. Painted with expressive, economical brushwork, the work beautifully captures the character of Brontë country and the quiet mood of a traditional Yorkshire hillside town. The elevated viewpoint across stone cottages, chimney stacks and winding back lanes gives the painting exceptional depth and authenticity, while the muted northern palette adds to its timeless quality. A highly decorative and evocative example of Pighills’ Yorkshire work, combining strong regional character with classic mid-century British impressionist style.
About the Artist
Joseph “Joe” Pighills was a respected Yorkshire painter associated with Oxenhope near Haworth and deeply connected to the landscapes and towns of West Yorkshire. Originally trained as a pattern engineer, he later studied at Keighley School of Art, developing a distinctive painterly approach influenced by British landscape traditions and French Impressionism. He became particularly admired for evocative depictions of Yorkshire villages, moorland scenery, industrial architecture and coastal subjects. His association with the Brontë country area around Haworth gives works such as this especially strong appeal to Yorkshire collectors and buyers seeking traditional British townscape paintings.
