Description

A wonderfully atmospheric original oil painting by noted Yorkshire artist Joseph Pighills, likely depicting the narrow harbour lanes of Staithes during the post-war fishing era of the 1950s. The composition captures the charm of an old coastal working village, with weathered buildings, moored boats and a small period car leading the eye toward the harbour beyond. The muted palette and expressive brushwork give the painting a timeless quality, combining strong decorative appeal with genuine regional character. Presented in a contemporary black box frame with float mounting, the work displays exceptionally well and is ready to hang immediately.

About the Artist

Joseph “Joe” Pighills was a respected Yorkshire painter associated with Oxenhope near Haworth and the wider West Yorkshire artistic tradition. Originally trained as a pattern engineer, he later studied at Keighley School of Art and developed a highly individual style influenced by British landscape painting and French Impressionism. Pighills became particularly admired for his atmospheric depictions of Yorkshire moorland, villages, industrial scenes and coastal subjects. His paintings have appeared regularly at leading regional auction houses including Tennants, Hartleys, Bonhams and Gorringes, where collectors value the strong sense of place and understated mood found throughout his work. His paintings are especially appealing to collectors of Yorkshire art, northern landscapes and mid-century British impressionism.
