Gardner places the low, dark profile of the island beneath an expansive sky dominated by large banks of cumulus cloud. The relatively low horizon gives the sky unusual prominence, creating a strong sense of open coastal space and changing weather. Below, small figures move across the exposed sands and shallow tidal water, giving scale to the broad estuary landscape.

The painting is handled with the direct and energetic brushwork associated with Gardner's landscapes. Blue water, warm ochre sand and the dark strip of Hilbre are established economically, while the clouds are built from broad strokes of white, grey and blue. The result is atmospheric rather than highly finished, retaining the immediacy of a scene observed directly.

Hilbre Island is an especially characteristic Gardner subject. Situated off the Wirral coast in the Dee Estuary, it lies within the landscape that provided him with subjects throughout his career. His paintings repeatedly explored the coastline, villages, harbours and countryside of the Wirral and North Wales.

About the Artist

Keith James Gardner RCA (1933-2025) was born in Liverpool and trained at Liverpool Art School and the Laird School of Art in Birkenhead. His career became closely associated with Liverpool, the Wirral and North Wales, both through the institutions with which he was involved and through the subjects he chose to paint.

Gardner was elected to the Royal Cambrian Academy in 1977. He worked as a full-time painter between 1975 and 1985 and subsequently spent thirteen years at the Williamson Art Gallery in Birkenhead.

The Royal Cambrian Academy recorded Gardner as specialising in small oil panels painted on the spot around North Wales and the Wirral. This direct approach is clearly reflected in Hilbre Island, where rapidly handled paint, changing light and recognisable local geography are more important than highly polished finish.

Gardner exhibited with the Royal Cambrian Academy over several decades. His documented exhibition subjects include Liverpool Waterfront, Farm near Pentre Foelas, Boat Re-Building, Birkenhead, Rhyd-Ddu, Caernarfon Castle, Evening, Central Pier & Beach, Blackpool, Walking in the Park and Boats, Heswall, April Afternoon. In 2019 the Royal Cambrian Academy mounted a dedicated retrospective exhibition of Gardner's work at its Conwy gallery.

Hilbre Island & the Dee Estuary

Hilbre Island forms part of a small group of tidal islands lying off the Wirral peninsula at the mouth of the Dee Estuary. At low tide the islands are surrounded by extensive areas of exposed sand and shallow tidal channels, producing the broad horizontal landscape seen in Gardner's painting.

The combination of the low island, wet sand, tidal water and enormous sky makes the location particularly suited to Gardner's interest in changing coastal light. The figures crossing the sands reinforce the scale and openness of the Dee Estuary.
