Keith James Gardner RCA (1933-2025) - House at Port Sunlight
A substantial oil on canvas attributed to Keith James Gardner RCA, depicting one of the distinctive Arts and Crafts houses at Port Sunlight on the Wirral. The black-and-white timbering, cream render, red brick lower storey and prominent chimney stacks closely match the architectural character of the model village.
The house is shown from below its raised garden terrace, giving the architecture a commanding presence. Broad steps lead through the retaining wall towards the building, while loosely painted shrubs and foliage soften the formal geometry of the facade. Strong sunlight catches the cream render, red masonry and tall chimney stack, creating vivid contrast with the dark timbering and shaded garden.
The painting is handled in Gardner's direct and impressionistic manner. Architectural details are clearly observed but not rigidly defined, with energetic brushwork and strong blocks of colour conveying the character of the house rather than producing a strictly topographical record. The blue-green sky and warm red and ochre passages give the scene the warmth and immediacy associated with his paintings of Liverpool, the Wirral and North Wales.

About the artist
Keith James Gardner RCA (1933-2025) was a highly respected British painter celebrated for his vibrant impressionist depictions of coastal and rural life. Born in Liverpool, he studied at Liverpool Art College and worked for many years at the Williamson Art Gallery in Birkenhead. Gardner was elected an Associate of the Royal Cambrian Academy in 1977, becoming a full member in 1983, and a major retrospective in 2019 marked over four decades of RCA membership. His work remains widely collected and admired for its warmth, colour, and strong sense of place.
