Description
A refined and atmospheric early still life by Morag Muir RSW, painted circa 1986 and acquired directly from exhibition in January 1987. The composition presents two vessels of delicately rendered flowers set against a softly structured tiled backdrop, creating a calm and contemplative interior scene.
The restrained palette and careful spatial balance demonstrate Muir’s emerging artistic voice shortly after completing her postgraduate studies. This makes the painting an especially interesting example from the formative years of her professional career — a sophisticated and quietly powerful work for collectors of Scottish contemporary art or those seeking a serene focal point within an interior.
About the Artist
Morag Muir (b.1960, Glasgow) is a highly regarded Scottish painter known for her lyrical still lifes and symbolic interior compositions. She studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee, graduating in 1982 before completing a postgraduate diploma in 1983. During her studies she was awarded the John Milne Purvis Prize and received a major travelling scholarship, enabling her to study medieval and Etruscan art in Italy — influences that subtly inform the structural clarity and symbolic undertones in her later work.
Muir’s paintings frequently explore flowers, vessels, textiles and architectural space, balancing intimacy with compositional discipline. She was elected to the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW) in 2019 and to the Paisley Art Institute (PAI) in 2021. Her work is regularly exhibited in respected UK galleries and is held in private collections. She lives and works in Newport-on-Tay, Fife.
