Description
A atmospheric and impressionistic Highland landscape by Peter S. Buchanan, depicting workers gathering hay beneath Scottish skies. The expressive brushwork and soft tonal handling give the work a lively, light filled quality that sits comfortably within the late Victorian move toward impressionistic naturalism.
Cabinet sized and highly decorative, this is a recorded example of Buchanan’s titled, previously appearing at auction in December 1998.
About the Artist
Peter S. Buchanan (fl. 1860–1911) was a Glasgow painter active during the late Victorian period. He exhibited 23 works at the Royal Scottish Academy between 1868 and 1882, establishing his presence within recognised Scottish exhibiting circles. He later worked in London and Windermere before settling in North Wales in 1905. Buchanan painted in both oil and watercolour, specialising in Highland rural subjects, river scenes and pastoral compositions.
