Description

Offered here is a beautifully balanced pair of late 19th-century oil paintings by J. Howard depicting tranquil Highland river landscapes. Each composition features a solitary fisherman positioned along the riverbank, lending both narrative interest and a contemplative mood to the scenes.

The paintings capture the romantic atmosphere associated with Victorian interpretations of the Scottish Highlands, combining soft natural tones with careful observation of water, sky and surrounding landscape. The inclusion of the fisherman in both works adds human scale and storytelling charm, creating a harmonious matched pair ideally suited for display together.

Presented in their original 19th-century wooden frames with gilt mounts, these paintings retain their authentic decorative appeal and remain ready to hang.

About the Artist

J. Howard was a British landscape painter active during the late Victorian period, particularly around the 1880s. Associated with London, Howard specialised in atmospheric depictions of Highland scenery and rural landscapes. Though relatively little documented, his works occasionally appear at auction—including a recorded sale at Christie’s South Kensington. His paintings align with the romantic British landscape tradition, emphasising quiet natural beauty and the reflective presence of figures within expansive scenery.
