About the Artist
Peter Coate (1926–2016) was a respected British painter and member of the Royal West of England Academy. Born in Nailsea, Somerset, he studied at the Chelsea School of Art under Ceri Richards and Robert Medley. Known for his deep connection to the English landscape, Coate painted extensively en plein air, producing lyrical watercolours of Somerset, the Lake District, and beyond. His work is admired for its atmospheric qualities and masterful handling of natural light, and is held in private collections across the UK.
