Hampson is best known as an important Northern School painter and printmaker, closely associated with the industrial towns, mills, mining communities and working people of Lancashire. He studied at Manchester College of Art from 1946 to 1952 and later became principal of Bolton College of Art and Design. He was also president of the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts from 1969 to 1976.
This painting shows another side of Hampson’s practice. Rather than an industrial Lancashire subject, it records a rural European landscape, handled with the same direct observation and textured brushwork that characterise his best work. The upright corn stalks in the foreground give the composition rhythm and structure, while the distant village and hillside create a quiet sense of place.
