Description
The composition is handled with Dunlop’s characteristic looseness and sensitivity to light. A broad sky fills much of the picture, with shifting blue and cream tones reflected across the water below.
The three small sailing boats give structure and movement to the scene, while the distant landforms suggest the Isle of Wight coastline.
Although compact in size, the painting has a pleasing sense of openness. Dunlop’s brushwork remains direct and expressive, especially in the broken surface of the sea and the soft handling of the cloud forms.
The subject is typical of his interest in coastal views, landscape and atmosphere.
About the Artist
Ronald Ossory Dunlop RA was an Irish-born painter, born in Dublin in 1894. He became known for landscapes, seascapes, portraits, figure studies and still life, working principally in oil.
Dunlop was a member of the London Group from 1934 and the New English Art Club from 1935. He was elected Associate of the Royal Academy in 1939 and became a full Royal Academician in 1950.
He exhibited widely throughout his career, including at the Royal Academy, the New English Art Club, the Royal Hibernian Academy, the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Leicester Galleries and the Redfern Gallery.
His work is represented in public collections, including the Government Art Collection. Dunlop’s painting is admired for its expressive handling, atmospheric colour and painterly response to landscape and coastal subjects.
