Description

A striking original portrait of a woman in head-and-shoulders view by Ronald Ossory Dunlop, painted with rich colour and lively brushwork in his trademark alla prima manner. The confident palette-knife and thick oil handling animate the sitter while retaining Dunlop’s expressive spontaneity. Presented in a sympathetic frame and ready to hang.

About the Artist

Ronald Ossory Dunlop (Irish/British, 1894–1973) was born in Dublin into a family of artists and writers and became an influential painter and founder of the Emotionist Group (1923). He studied at the Manchester School of Art, Wimbledon College of Art, and the City & Guilds of London Art School. Dunlop exhibited widely, including at the Royal Academy (RA), the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA), and the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA) in Dublin. Celebrated for expressive landscapes, seascapes, still lifes and portraits, his works are painted with rich colour and lively, direct application. His paintings are held in major UK public collections, including the Tate.

Estimated Date

Likely from Dunlop’s mature period, c. 1950–1965, when he produced many expressive oil portraits on board.

Provenance & Notes

Privately sourced in the UK. Original oil on vintage Daler Board, with a signature attributed to Ronald Ossory Dunlop and consistent with his known hand. The Daler Board label (“Handmade at Wareham”) aligns with 1950s–1960s manufacture. Palette-knife passages and thick impasto correspond to Dunlop’s later mature style; the earthy palette fits his post-war portrait oeuvre.
