Harvest Time at Kenmuir was exhibited at the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts in 1889 as catalogue no. 565, with an asking price of £11. The painting shows agricultural workers gathering the harvest while a horse-drawn machine moves through the field. Hutcheson places the figures and horses across the lower part of the composition, with the River Clyde, distant hills and a broad cloud-filled sky beyond. The darker trees provide a strong visual counterpoint to the pale field and open sky, while the grouped figures give the landscape a clear narrative focus. About the Artist

Walter Hutcheson was a Glasgow-based Scottish painter with a documented exhibiting career from 1867 until 1910, the year of his death. He was a sustained professional artist whose work encompassed river landscapes, rural genre scenes and subjects drawn from the Clyde, the White Cart, Arran and the west of Scotland. His recorded titles include Workers in the Field, The Reaper, The Hay Cart, Old Mill on the Cart, Old Garden at Carmyle and The Clyde at Carmyle.

Our research records 131 exhibited works across the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Paisley Art Institute, Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Hibernian Academy, Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and exhibitions in Manchester, as well as two works shown at the Glasgow International Exhibition of 1888. His Glasgow Institute total was probably higher than the surviving published count, since he was exhibiting there from 1867. Harvest Time at Kenmuir, shown at the Royal Glasgow Institute in 1889, belongs to this well-documented and sustained Scottish exhibiting career.

Exhibited at the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts in 1889 as catalogue no. 565, under the title Harvest Time at Kenmuir, priced at £11. The work is signed to the front and titled on the stretcher and on a label to the reverse. Kenmuir is an area of farmland and woodland on the north bank of the River Clyde near Carmyle in the east of Glasgow. Hutcheson returned repeatedly to the Carmyle and Kenmuir area throughout his exhibiting career.
